Types of Crime and Investigations

Fraud

Under Austrian criminal law, fraud is classed as a property crime when offenders intentionally defraud victims by making false representations or concealing facts with the intention of unlawfully enriching themselves and thereby causing financial loss to a third party.

Fraud-type offences belong to the group of property offences and are laid down in the Austrian Penal Code in sections 146 to 148.

The Sub-Department for Fraud, Forgery and Economic Crime initiates and coordinates national and international measures and pursues investigations to solve fraud cases. This also includes fraud committed through the Internet.

Fraud comes in many shapes: data espionage, online fraud, fraudulent failure to supply goods, service fraud to advance free fraud.
