Statistics and Graphs

Police-Recorded Crime Statistics (PKS)

The Police-Recorded Crime Statistics document and display the development of criminal activities in Austria, based on the Austrian Penal Code (StGB) and supplementary penal provisions. All cases reported since 2001 have been registered electronically in the PKS. On the basis of these figures, strategies are developed. In order to combat crime effectively and sustainably, long-term trends as shown in the PKS have to be evaluated. The PKS serve crime prevention and prosecution purposes and are the basis for organisational planning and decision making.

Only statistical data on reported crimes are covered, i.e. only offences reported to the police and forwarded to the court. The "dark figure of crime" or outcomes of court proceedings are not included.

The PKS figures reflect the public's reporting behaviour, the intensity of police checks as well as any changes in legislation. Crime developments are assessed over a period of ten years.

The structure of the PKS is frequently adapted, due to changes in the legislation on the one hand, and due to current societal phenomena and new parameters that have to be considered on the other.
